This blog was inspired, at least in part, by Mark Batterson’s book, Primal.
His challenge to go back to the bare bones basics of Christianity encouraged me to follow through on something that I already knew I needed to do: Read through the Bible cover-to-cover… with no other agenda than to hear God’s voice.
As Batterson wrote:
When we open the Bible, it’s like God opens His mouth. That’s how we tune in to His voice… Until you hear the voice of God, you won’t be able to sing His song. Why? Because you’re out of tune… But when you open the Bible and really hear the voice of God-His loving voice, His graceful voice, His authoritative voice- your life begins to echo God’s. (Pgs 72-73)
My primary Bible for this journey is an NASB Study Bible that I plan to underline & highlight & have close at hand as much as possible.
I also have an account on YouVersion – a really neat site that I’m pretty sure I’m under-utilizing! I’m not comfortable posting my ramblings as public “contributions” on YouVersion (I’m not sure that I have anything to truly “contribute!”), and I’m not sure that the Journal function on YouVersion is going to be very useful to me… so this blog will serve as my journal.
My goal is to read at least 10 chapters per day. I’m comfortable that I could read that much without turning it into a speedreading project & still be able to meditate on what I am reading. If I could maintain that pace, I would cover the Bible’s 1189 chapters in just under 4 months. But I’m also realistic
I realize that there will be days when I don’t meet my goal. As ironic as it might seem… since I work for my church and Sundays are usually extremely busy, I don’t expect that I’ll be able to meet my goal on most Sundays. Taking Sundays out of the equation, I should still be able to read the 1189 chapters in just under 20 weeks — or a little less than 5 months.
